Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights. The Mary I group formed with the aim of meeting weekly to discuss human-rights issues and writes to governments to express their concern on a range of issues. Guest speakers also come to Mary I through Amnesty International. In 2006, a lawyer whose representation of disadvantaged people and death row prisoners in America’s Deep South has won widespread recognition, Bryan A. Stevenson, gave a talk in Mary I as part of an Amnesty International speaker’s tour.
