The Student Parent Welfare Fund (SPWF) is an emergency discretionary fund which is used to assist expectant students and student parents at Mary Immaculate College.  The fund, which originates directly from MISU, is administered through the Student Parent Support Service and resources are targeted at those students most in need, on a once-off basis each year, subject to the availability of funding.

Students who apply to the fund are assessed on an individual and confidential basis. Funding is approved by a committee consisting of the College Access/Disability Officer, Student Parent Support Service Coordinator and a MISU representative.

Application Procedure

Students are advised to meet with the Student Parent Support Services (SPSS) Coordinator in the first instance. She will discuss the student’s need for financial assistance in the strictest of confidence. This may involve making a referral to other services within the College or linking with external agencies, as appropriate. She may also outline the application procedure and assist students in completing the SPWF application form.

Students are required to return their completed application form directly to the SPSS Coordinator and must submit receipts along with their application to verify their financial requirements. Examples of other supporting documentation that may be required include the following:

      • Copy of child’s birth certificate (compulsory)
      • Crèche/Child-minder receipts
      • Receipts for baby equipment/supplies
      • Documentation to support maintenance payments (if applicable)

When to Apply

This depends on a student’s individual circumstances if they feel they are in a crisis or emergency situation as an expectant student or a student parent at any time during the academic year.

Categories of Funding

Funding is available under two categories:

1.  Initial costs

Costs associated with having a baby e.g. baby equipment/hospital bag etc. Expectant students are advised to link with the Student Parent Support Services Coordinator to access a wide range of dedicated services and supports.

2.  Exceptional circumstances

Circumstances that may require emergency funding e.g. changes in circumstances, unforeseen difficulties during the academic year, changes in childcare arrangements (including course requirements which necessitate special child minding arrangements and/or accommodation).
