Hey-yo!
It’s mad to think we’re back in action 3 weeks already!! Myself and the rest of SU Exec have been working flat out wheeling and dealing on your behalf. Here is some of the story so far.
I’ve been busy meeting all the powers that be (i.e. the decision makers) such as the Health Promotion Office. The girls there are always working on new and exciting stuff to bring to the college so hopefully I’ll be able to work with them over the coming months to make things even better. At the moment, they are running classes such as yoga and thai-chi so check them out on campus or online to find out all the info.
Jaffa and Gearoid (Clubs and Socs) have just finished running the clubs and societies days. This is where you lot signed up for stuff like the tea society and the home and away society. I guess there are loads of people who like to drink tea and watch home and away. Nice! Other societies include the LGBT society, the mature students and the international student’s society. All clubs and societies will be meeting now to elect a committee so I will be around for a chat. Just remember, I’m here for you so use away.
Mairead (the prez) and I recently met with representatives from UL, LIT and the ART College to work on a joint initiative for the upcoming Mental Health Week in October. It is called Mind your Health and not only is it a fantastic event to be involved in, it will be the first time all four colleges have worked together on something so massive. The initiative will run concurrently to the national event in an attempt to make you guys more aware of mental health issues that we all face on a regular basis. Keep an eye out for posters in the coming weeks.
The soccer girls are getting ready for the big season ahead so we’ve helped arrange a pre-match friendly with a difference. This Thursday (22nd Sept), they play CIT in a friendly in Cork and after the match will travel to Turners Cross to watch Ireland v France in a ladies qualifier. This day is going to be massive major so anyone still out there wanting to give soccer a go, head down to training this Tuesday at 6pm. The girls train on the soccer pitch by the car park. Don’t forget full change room and shower facilities are available in the Tailteann. All new members welcome so get on down!
Orientation for first years was hectic crazy but great fun with the BBQ a definite highlight of the week. At one stage Sr. Delia was throwing wellies down the pitch whilst the bones of 100 people were patiently standing in line for a big phat burger. Slightly surreal but hey-that’s Mary I!
Last week I also met the new crew enrolled on the contemporary living course so a big shout out to all of you. I hope you have all settled in well and levels of homework/assignments will be restricted to one word: limited. Along with all the usual exec meetings every Monday and the other house-keeping, the last few weeks have been massive epic but all the signs are indicating that this year is going to be the best one yet!
Before I sign off, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for voting me into office last semester. THANK YOU.I hope everyone is giving it loads and remember I’m available anytime so call down to the SU or email me:
