A letter from your President and Vice President

Dear students,

There will be a demonstration on Wednesday in Dublin in protest against the cuts to teaching allowances. We are aware that not all of you plan to enter the teaching profession but this is important for those of you that do.

The cuts include:

  • 10% wage cut
  • 7.5% pension levy
  • Cuts to allowances such as:
    • Gaeltacht and Gaelscoil
    • Yard duty
    • Island Bonuses
    • Masters and honours degrees bonuses

Overall this comes to a 25% wage cut and you would stand to lose between €7000,-€11,000 in your first year teaching which over 3 years would be a potential loss of €33,000.

In response to this, the INTO, the ASTI and TUI have organised this demonstration for all student teachers or those who plan to be. We are working with these unions as well as the other Students’ Unions whose students these cuts will effect.

MISU are providing free buses to the demonstration that will leave at 11.30 from outside TARA. Those interested in attending MUST sign up in the SU before noon tomorrow.

If interested in going, please wear red.

Thank you for listening.

Kind regards,

Mairéad and Noel
