Being a fan of the novel by Kathryn Stocket, I was nervous going along with the girls to see the film adaption of The Help.
I had hoped it wouldn’t let me down like may screen adaptations of good books, but I’m delighted to say it didn’t disappoint. Based in Jackson Mississippi in the 1960s, a time rife in racial tensions, the Help tells the story of a stubborn young writer Skeeter who decides to account the stories of black maids working for white families. Raised herself by a black maid, she becomes horrified realising the treatment of maids in most households and decides to incorporate stories about daily heartbreaking experiences faced by black maids at the time. Whilst the plot appears gloomy, it is still funny in parts, mainly due to the brilliant characters southern humour particularly Aibileen and Minny, two of the maids. Not just one for the girls The Help boasts a brilliant plot and would encourage viewers to read the book also.
