Mary Immaculate College took their first ever Fresher’s Football title on Wednesday when they defeated Queens University by a single point in a game played in Belfield Sports Ground of UCD. Coached by Limerick hurling and football star Brian Begley they showed great resolve and skill against a physically stronger Queens team.
Playing with the wind in the first half the Limerick college got off to a perfect start with a point from Eoghan Donnellan after 30 seconds. This was followed up by a point from a free from the same player three minutes later. Eventually Queens settled and worked the ball towards the Mary I where Ryan Slavin was fouled and duly put the free over the bar. From the kick out Jeremiah Wright won the ball and linked with Michael O’Gorman who found Donnellan with a long delivery and Donnellan duly put the ball over the bar.
Half way through the half Queens broke through and their full forward Ciaran Lappin had just the goalkeeper to beat but Adam O’Donnell in goals brilliantly pushed the ball away for a ’45. From that kick Peter Murphy won the ball and it was worked down to the Queens goal where Cian O’Sullivan was fouled and full forward Sean Cotteril scored the free to leave the score 0-04 to 0-01. Points were traded by Mark Landers from Queens and a monstrous effort from 55metres by Eoghan Donnellan. Two points from Queens centre forward Jack Kielt left a point between the teams before another Cotteril free on the stroke of half-time left the score MIC 0-06 Queens 0-04.
Playing into the wind in the second half a 2-point lead seemed too little. From the throw in the ball was played into Cotteril who flicked the ball into the path of Jamie Malone and he coolly slotted the game’s first goal. Queens replied with a point from David Gilmore. Three minutes late a second goal followed for Mary Immaculate College, this time from Cotteril who was on hand at the end of a piercing run by Seamus Brosnan.
Queens than made use of the wind and dominated possession. They found it difficult to break down a solid Mary I defence who harried and pressurized the Queens players every time they attacked. As the half wore on and players were tiring some of the tackling lad to fouls and points from free takers Jack Kielt whittled away at the Mary I lead.
With ten minutes to go, Queens scored their 11th point. Soon after, Jamie Malone was through again at the other end but this time Queens goalkeeper Mark Salters made an excellent save. Four minutes later Seamus Brosnan could have sealed the game but saw his bullet of a shot come back off the crossbar. However Queens could not break down a resolute Mary I defence who had regained their discipline and maintained the one-point lead to the end.
Jamie Wall accepted the Division 2 cup on behalf of a jubilant Mary I team and he paid tribute to coach Brian Begley for his leadership. Final score Mary Immaculate 2-06, Queens 0-11.
