Psychology Society

The MIC Psychology Society was set up in 2005 and provides its members with access to very good resources. Studying psychology can be very demanding and the main aim of the society is to provide help, assistance and some fun (nights out), for its members.

Last year the Psychology Society brought a number of guest speakers to Mary I in Semester 1 including John Phayer who presented his research masters in Education entitled ‘Dyslexia and Assistive Technology in Education: What benefits can be gained by third level students with Dyslexia from the use of the Assistive Technology software package, TextHelp?’, the director of the Applied Psychology MA at Trinity College Dublin and Maria Dempsey from UCC who presented information on the MA in Counselling postgraduate. They also held a Table Quiz in Scott’s Bar, wine receptions and parties.

In April psychology students from all over Ireland descended upon Mary I in their hundreds for the weekend as the 30th Annual Congress of Psychology Students in Ireland was hosted by Mary Immaculate College for the first time ever.

Key speakers included Dr. Jessica Bramham, a lecturer in Clinical Neuropsychology in UCD, who addressed the Congress on Friday night as well as Rita Carter, the well known and award-winning medical writer and author of Mapping the Mind, who spoke on Saturday night.

Speaking about the event Carol McCarthy of the Psychology Society and Congress Committee said “this two day event provided a unique opportunity for psychology students to present their thesis in front of their peers in addition to having their abstracts published in the Irish Psychologist.

A diversity of subjects discussed included papers entitled Studs, Sluts, Perverts, and Prudes: University Students’ Perceptions of the Practices that Constitute “Normal” Sexuality for Men and Women, Will Being A Baby Faced or Mature Faced Male Affect Job Prospects? and The Influence of Cognitive Dissonance Induction on the Amount of Alcohol Students Drink.

The Congress won Best Event at the MISU Society Awards. For more information visit the Psychology Website on www.mic.ul.ie/psychologysoc
