The Students’ Union represents over 2,700 students here in Mary I. Understandably, the officers can’t talk to all of you on every issue. That’s why we have class reps - to deal with problems at a class level and bring them to our attention.

Class reps are the most important part of the Union. The Class Reps, backed by the SU, are one of the main vehicles by which students can have a measure of control over their learning experience.

A strong class rep system is fundamental to organising successful campaigns on behalf of the Students. Class reps are the eyes and ears of the Union. At Union Council they mandate officers to undertake campaigns.

Class reps are elected by their classes through a vote. Being a class rep will give you an invaluable insight into how college works. It can also be a very empowering and enjoyable experience and it looks great on your CV.

All Class Reps meet every second Wednesday at 6pm during the semester for Union Council.

What A Class Rep Does
There are three basic functions of a class rep;

• 1: Represent your class in the college and in the Students Union.
• 2: Represent the Union back to your class.
• 3: Consult with your class so you can represent them better.

Representation

As a representative it is your job to

• • Attend Union Council Meetings, vote on motions and inform your class on what’s been decided.
• • Remember that you are representing your class and not your own views.
• • Talk to lecturers about possible problems which may arise in your class.
• • Represent your class to other college bodies such as Student Services etc.
• • Take an active part in organising the now infamous class parties.

By no means is this a comprehensive list of a Class Reps duties, it is more a guideline of what has been happening over the previous years in relation to Class Reps. It is ultimately up to you how well you get on in your new role. There are many reasons to run for Class Rep.

There is a lot of work but there is also a lot of fun to be had along with lots of socialising and perks of the job. You will get a Class Rep Hoodie as well as other treats over the year, for all your work and time.

How do I become a Class Rep?

You must submit a nomination form to the Students’ Union office before 1 p.m on Thursday the 16th of September, Week 2. Nomination forms are available from the SU office and will also be available on Club and Socs Day. To be nominated you must collect ten signatures from your class excluding your own. Late nominations will not be accepted.

If a position is contested, elections will take place in the classes on Friday 17th, Monday 20th or Tuesday 21st of September. If you have been nominated, you must be in class at the time of elections in order to be elected. If you are not in class at the time and someone else from your class has also been nominated, then the other person will be automatically elected. A list of those deemed elected will be published on www.misu.ie and at the SU reception.
