What is a Class Representative?
A Class Rep is a student who is elected by their classmates to represent the views of their class to MISU and MIC.
They sit on Union Council and play an integral role in representing students, helping students overcome problems and maintaining the quality of courses in MIC.
Every class can elect at least one Rep (or more than one depending on the size of the class) and every student is eligible to stand as a Class Representative for their Class.
Class reps help MISU to make your time at MIC memorable and fun.
With over 40 courses on offer at MIC and a breakdown of hundreds of classes, it would be impossible for the Executive Committee to meet all of these classes on a regular basis. This is where Class Reps are the key. Class Reps link the MIC student body with MISU and work with us to ensure your class's voice is being heard.
If your class is having any issues, wants to give feedback or has any suggestions for MISU, your Class Rep can take all of this onboard and report back to us.
All the class reps in MIC sit on a meeting with select members of the Executive Committee called Union Council (UC). These meetings take place every two weeks and are an opportunity for your class rep to advocate on your behalf.
All class reps have voting power at Union Council and can vote on any motions that are carried, and through Union Council, they can also hold the Executive Committee accountable and can task the officers with projects or issues to follow-up on.
Class reps also attend one meeting per semester with MIC faculty staff as part of the Student Learning and Partnership Dialogue Charter. These meetings provide class reps with an opportunity to speak with faculty staff directly regarding student concerns, issues or recommendations relating to academic life and the overall student experience in MIC.
Class reps introduce themselves to their class, stay connected with their class, actively seek feedback from their class and work to keep both their classmates and themselves informed on anything that is happening in MIC that may be applicable to them.
Why you should be a Class Rep!
We think it is important to recognise the time and effort that you put in to being a Rep and representing the best interests of your class. Based on attendance and engagements with MISU, Reps will have the opportunity to earn a letter of recognition from the MIC President, Professor Dermot Nestor at the end of the year. This is fantastic to help boost your CV and is sure to impress future employers! The letters will be presented at an official ceremony held in the Spring Semester.
We have also introduced some changes to the Rep System for this year, these include:
- All rep nominations will progress to an Election which will be held through our online voting system.
- You won’t need to call to our offices to have your headshot taken. Simply attach a headshot or passport style photo to your nomination form when you are submitting it. This photo will be used on the ballot paper for the online election and if elected, will be shared on misu.ie and the Class Rep Noticeboards.
- Training will take place online through a self-guided Moodle Module which you will be enrolled in on successful election to your role. You will have 2 weeks, from the date of enrolment, to complete your training.
- The links to join the Class Rep WhatsApp Group will be shared in your welcome email and on the Moodle Module. You can choose whether or not to join the group though we do encourage you to join so you can receive regular updates.
- Reps will receive their welcome pack when they have attended their first Union Council meeting and completed their online training. This year’s pack includes vouchers for an Siopa and the MISU Printing Service
Along with all of the above, being a Rep also gives you the opportunity to acquire new skills that will benefit you personally, academically, and professionally, all whilst completing your studies.
A class rep gets to:
- Contribute to and get an insight in to how MISU and MIC work.
- Have networking opportunities and work with other motivated, committed, and enthusiastic students to advocate for your peers and solve course related problems.
- Meet like-minded students and make a positive impact.
- Boost your CV by developing and displaying leadership skills, communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Learn about teamwork, public speaking, negotiation and problem solving. Employers love to see this!
- Have access to the MISU Class Rep Rewards Programme and the opportunity to earn a Letter of Recognition from MIC President, Professor Dermot Nestor and MISU President, Jayde Ryan.
What are the time commitments?
From attending Union Council to academic meetings and making time to interact with your class, the total expected time commitment for this role is approximately 15 hours per semester or 30 hours per academic year.
Every class is entitled to have at least 1 class rep and every student is eligible to stand as a Class Representative for their Class.
