Plagiarism is the act of presenting another person's work as if it were your own. This can even happen accidentally if you have not referenced correctly.

MIC's guidelines give very clear instructions about what is considered plagiarism and you should make sure you understand how to reference your work properly. Dr. Paul O'Brien from the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) has provided some tips and resources on how you can avoid plagiarising in your assignments

Leave plenty of time

Do not leave your work until the last minute. Leaving time for thorough proofreading will allow you to spot any issues with referencing.

 Reference your notes

When you are researching your topic, make sure you take down full details of your sources as you go along. If you're using direct quotations make a note of the page numbers too.

Use your own words

This helps you to engage more with the material. Don't worry that another author can 'say it better than you: your lecturers are interested in your ideas and opinions, and do not expect a perfect writing style. Your writing style comes with experience and practice.

Reference as you go

When you're writing your assignment, include the references as you go along. Remember to follow the preferred referencing system i.e., Harvard, APA, or footnotes.

Check your references

If you have used direct quotes, make sure you have used quotation marks. Make sure any long quotes are indented and have a citation. Double-check your references and bibliography.

Get help for free

The College offers free services to help you with your writing – the Academic Learning Centre – either in person or online – will read your work and check it for plagiarism. Usually a one-day turnaround.  Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Public Health Mid West

The Department of Public Health Mid-West's poster (above) offers a reminder of how transmissable the current strain of Covid-19 is in Ireland.

If you are mixing with other households, ONE CASE can quickly turn into large household/workplace and community outbreaks.

This is an incredibly tough time for everyone, but we all must play our part.

I have been in close contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19/ a housemate or someone in my accommodation has been told they have Covid-19, what do I do?

It is really important to understand that, if you have been a close contact of someone who has Covid-19 (close contact is spending more than 15 minutes within 2 metres with an infected person or living in the same house or accommodation with an infected person), you must self-isolate at home even if you feel well and get tested for Covid-19. For College GP services, for Limerick students please telephone the Ashdown Medical Centre at +353 61 301200 and for Thurles students, a GP Service is available with Dr Liam Collins at The Surgery, Fianna Road, Thurles by contacting +353 504 21155. There is a €10 charge for the college GP appointments for MIC students.

Even if you don’t have any symptoms, self-isolation and following the national and medical advice you receive is essential because if you don’t, you risk spreading the virus to your friends, family and the wider community.

The HSE website provides information on Covid-19 symptoms, close contacts, advice for self-isolating and restricting your movements (staying at home).

I am having financial difficulties as a result of Covid-19, is there support available to me?

If you, your household’s income, or employment status has changed, you should let SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) know, as this may allow you to apply/reapply under your new circumstances. Find more information on SUSI’s changed circumstances and SUSI’s FAQ section here.

There is also an Emergency Student Welfare Fund, which is administered by the Access Office and MISU – contact Dee, the MISU General Manager (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) Aoife (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or the Access Office by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If you are a student parent, there is additional support available through the MIC Student Parent Support Service.  Contact Nicola (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), the SPSS Co-Ordinator for advice on the funding available.

If you have lost your job due to Covid-19, you will be able to apply for the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP). All information for this fund can be found on gov.ie

Who can I talk to about Accommodation questions or concerns?

To get advice from the college Accommodation Office, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or see their information on the MIC website.

Referendum Results

MISU are excited about the developments that have taken place over the summer on the Thurles campus as well as those which are planned over the coming academic year.
The MISU office is located on the second floor of the main building and the Thurles College Officer (MISU Exec member) Evan Gorrell, is on hand to advise class reps and students on questions and issues that arise. Keep an eye on our social media platforms for drop in hours for Evan over the academic year.
Evan reports back to the Sabbats, the MISU President (position to be filled) and Rachel Dunne, MISU Vice President, ensuring that every student has a voice and is represented as a member of MISU. Evan attends the weekly MISU Exec meetings (by phone, skype or in person) to bring forward any ideas, issues or concerns which the Thurles students have.
The Sabbats will be available to meet with on campus on a regular basis in the coming year so don’t be shy with getting in contact or dropping in for a chat. If there is ever a time where you feel that you need a MISU representative for advice, to attend a meeting, to assist with event organising or to represent you or your classmates, contact our MISU Thurles office on 0504 20598 or call MISU Limerick Office on 061-400013. We’ll be happy to help you or point you in the right direction!

Huge congratulations are in order for Rachel Dunne of our SVP Society who won Best Individual in the Small Colleges Category at this years Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) Awards in Athlone last week. Congratulations also go to our Harry Potter Society, International Society & Live Music Society who were also present representing MIC Limerick.
Over 400 staff and students from colleges across Ireland took part in the annual Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) Awards; held in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone. This event sees student college societies, from all over the country, compete against each other for 20 awards in 13 different categories. One of the major highlights in the college calendar, these awards celebrate the unyielding work students do to create a greater, more enjoyable and more holistic college life for their peers. This year’s awards were in partnership with Please Talk, Partridge Peartree, USI & Comhlámh.

Hello everybody! Hope the college semester is going well for everyone. Can you believe its coming to the end of Week 10! Here is what we have been up to for the last two weeks.

We have continued with our Thought of the Week campaign and we hope that everyone who has seen them has taken some comfort in what they have read. We intend on doing a mini collage of all the thoughts at the end of the semester so do keep an eye out for that!

Last week, Week 9 was Mental Health Week and we had a variety of events throughout the week. On Monday 2nd November we had the Feels Board so that people could write down how they felt. We got to see all types of feelings some of which were fun to read! Balloon volleyball also took place in the student’s lounge and it was great to see students getting involved. We also had a Random Acts of Kindness Day, where we handed out free lollipops, pens and hugs to any student who wanted them. On Tuesday 3rd November ADAPT came in on campus and gave a talk in the student lounge from 14:00 to 15:00. They also had an information stand from 11:00 to 14:00 in the TARA Forum.

On Wednesday 4th November GROW were on campus providing information from 11:00 to 14:00 about the services they provide. We also had the balloon pop and Pie a Prez outside the TARA Building. The money raised on the day from throwing water balloons and sponges at James will go to ADAPT. On Thursday 5th November we held the day in the life where students were in a wheelchair for the day around the campus. They went to their lectures and spent the whole day in the chairs experiencing what a day in the life feels like. We also had Pieta House and CSPP on campus providing information. A gladiator inflatable game was also available for students to use in the students lounge on the day. At the end of the week we also gave away a Feel Good Hamper to one lucky winner.

Next week is Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week so please keep an eye out for the events running on campus and please get involved. There is also a quiz running in Dolans on the Wednesday and we would urge everyone to go and have a good time.

Hoping the college semester is going well for everyone. If you need anything or have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Peace & Love,

Tina & Mark.

Hey everyone,

We hope that everyone is doing well and that you’re not getting too stressed coming up to exam and assignment times.

It’s been a busy few weeks for us since we last posted! We held our second Clubs & Socs Council where we spoke about buying clothes for societies and planning trips. We had a vote to move Clubs & Socs Week to Week 8.

Clubs & Socs Week was very successful as we had so many exciting events around campus. Every society brought their A game and raised a lot of money for various charities in the process. We would like to thank each and every person who committed to such an exhilarating week of events.

SVP Society did a coin drive races, One World gave out free Fair Trade smootheis, Harry Potter Soc had their character hunt to find their team for UCC’s Triwizard Tournament. The Writers’ Soc held their annual That Literary Thing as well as their 12 Hour Theatre.

Gaisce did a skipathon and raffle for a School Placement hamper, LGBTA held a Table Quiz, Cumann Gaelach held a movie night, Trad Soc & Trad Dance held a Ceili in Fennessys, Live Music Society advertised for Halloween and held a dress up night during their live performance in O’Dwyers.

The Art Soc held their colour run with over 90 people turning up for the event. We have helped set up the Equestrian Society. We also held our first ever Society Drive, similar to clubs & Socs day. MIDAS had a bake sale. The equestrian society had a guess how many jellies in the jar also.

We also got Lockers appointed for Societies where societies can now leave their packs and use to store items in between meetings. Both of us went up t Dublin for a BICS meeting on Friday during Week 8. We got some information about the BICS and the upcoming awards.

Thanks for reading!!

We will talk to you soon,

Hard to believe it’s week ten already, the semester is absolutely flying by!

Last week an excellent Mental Health awareness week was organised by Tina and Mark. The week included an abundance of brilliant, enjoyable events as well as some thought-provoking workshops.

The colour run for the Art Soc was also held last Wednesday evening around tailteann and Summerville, and although we couldn’t participate, the event looked like great fun so a huge well done to all involved.

Finally, Clubs and Socs council was held during the week, chaired by Bronagh and Mark. Hopefully attendance can be improved by the sports teams, which we will work hard to improve.

As always, if anyone has any questions feel free to approach either of us and we will be more than happy to help!

Hey guys!

We hope you are keeping well J The last two weeks have been so busy but enjoyable for us, and we hope for you too!! Week 9 was full of events and different activities run by our wonderful welfare and equality officers :D We surely enjoyed ourselves getting to go and talk to the different organisations around college such as ADAPT, Pieta House, CSPP and the like J MIDAS, the writers society and the art society contributed greatly to the week, with workshops on expressing yourself and the colour run which went down a treat :D There was free hugs, a feelings board and Random Acts of Kindness taking place all week. If you saw a banana going around on Thursday giving hugs, that was me :D (Rachel) For the rest of the week, with the opportunity to pop balloons, play as a gladiator and pie the president, there was no reason for any boredom around college. Thursday we saw 6 students volunteer to spend the day in wheelchairs to get an insight in ‘the day in the life.’ This was a great eye opener to everyone and rose a substantial amount of money for Enable Ireland. This week was a little quieter. However, the writer’s society had their event Hit and Miss which we can say was a definite Hit this semester. Don’t forget to keep participating in events to ensure an incredible RAG week for you guys and we really hope to see you at the big quiz Wednesday 18th at 8 o clock which promises to be an incredible night :D

Hey Guys!!

Can’t believe it’s week 6 already! Time is just flying by.

Week 5 was a quiet one for us with no events, which made time to plan other fun ones!

Week 6 however was a very entertaining week as it was Disney Movie Week. It took place in the Seomra Caidrimh with the lovely Emily Clarke being the host. We had a different movie every day from 15:00 – 17:00 and the movie on Friday was from 12:00 – 14:00.

Week 6 also brought us the open day with the population of the college doubling for 2 days. It was a huge success and the students seemed really enthusiastic and interested in coming here in September 2016 so we wish them the best of luck in their exams.

Enjoy weeks 7 and 8 and try to remain calm and focused. You are halfway there and doing so well.

Peace and Love!

Welfare and Equality Blog Week 3 and 4.

Hey Everybody!

First of all, we hope everyone is having a good semester so far and that lectures are going well. Assignments are beginning to be given out so be sure to start them as soon as you can to avoid the last minute panic before submission. We have been keeping the Welfare & Equality thought of the week going, so keep an eye out for the posters up around the college

Recently in Week 3 we had our Monday Blues on Monday 21st September. The event was held in the Tara Forum and we sold blue ribbons, and had blue face paint for people in order to raise some awareness for Men’s Cancer. We also had the keepy uppy challenge on the day and whoever could do the most keepy uppys would win two tickets to Ryan Sheridan. Our top scorer had 234 keepy uppys!

On Thursday 24th September, the Opening Academic Year Mass was held. There was a lovely service with both staff and students taking part.

Week 4 was S.H.A.G Week. For those of you who didn’t know S.H.A.G stands for Sexual Health And Guidance. The week kicked off with the Contraception Booth on campus, providing information to all students on alternative forms of contraception. GOSHH (Gender Orientation Sexual Health HIV), were also on campus providing information on the services they provide, and handing out free condom packs to any student who requested one.

On Tuesday 29th September, the did you know challenge took place. Little strips of paper were placed around the student lounge. There was a great interest in this as many people stopped and took the time to read the important information regarding safe sex. On Wednesday 30th September, the erotic bake sale took place in the Tara Forum. We had an assortment of cakes and buns for sale on the day and it was great to see students buy some as the money raised on the day was also going towards Men’s Cancer Charity.

We hope everyone is having a great semester so far this year. This is only a brief summary of what has happened in the last two weeks. We have many more events that will be happening in the coming weeks, so please keep an eye out and don’t be afraid to take part!

Hope Weeks 3 and 4 were not too stressful, and if you do ever need us don’t hesitate to contact us on Facebook or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Clubs and Sports Blog Week 3 and 4.

Hello!

Aaron and Morgan here with our first blog as Clubs and Sports officers. Week one was super busy for the SU with all the various events going on! We had great fun at the Library on Thursday with the UV party and we had the pleasure to drown people with all the paint!

We’re already working hard to get our first few events on the road, and we can’t wait for everyone to see what we have in store.

Until next time,

See you soon!

Societies Blog Week 3 and 4.

Hi all =)

So this week was pretty hectic- we had our very first Clubs and Socs Council (Whoop whoop!) There was a great turn out, which we were so thrilled about (imagine if no one was there… #awkward). We gave some training to our newly elected societies (with help from Dee and Dave in the SU) and even gave out FREE pizza (why are we so nice?). We had so many great suggestions given to us by committees- such as a drop-in Society Officer hour (watch this space)

Behind the scenes we’ve been working on dividing out the Clubs & Socs Discount Cards which hopefully will be given out to students very soon. We are also receiving some interest about setting up some new societies so keep your eyes on the Facebook page =)

We also worked this week on helping societies reach their full 20 members by advertising events and sharing Facebook pages. Most societies are truly up and running with some really cool, exciting events being planned (again- watch this space!) We are already REALLY siked for Clubs and Socs Week in week 8!

Don’t forget

Much love,

Brónagh & Mark

Events Blog Week 3 and 4.

Hey guys!

Again, we have had another crazy two weeks! It started with Blue Monday which was organized wonderfully by our magnificent Welfare and Equality officers :D We had great fun pinning ribbons and painting the hands and faces of all those who participated J We had the chance to mingle with all the rez block girls last Wednesday at their pizza night J Lots of new friendships were established that night. Last Thursday was the international mixer and we have to say, we can’t think of a time where we have had more fun!! Lots of games, sweets and the chance to meet wonderful people, it was a great night :D With this week being SHAG week, there was a load going on around the college. There was wonderful organisations in with us giving advice to those who asked. Tuesday had ‘Did You Know’ facts around the lounge. Wednesday was the erotic bake sale which went down a treat. Recap on whats been happening :

Orientation went off with a bang with our new 865 students getting the low down on the start of their journey here at MIC. The enthusiasm from all our Fresher’s was amazing and it showed with over 500 people at the quiz in Dolan’s. Keep it up guys.

Fresher’s Week then took over with rodeo bulls, free pizza  and loads more going on around campus not to mention all the nightime events. From county colours in The Orchard, to destroying you all with UV paint in The Library, Fred Cooke giving it socks and of course Smash Hits taking it back to the 90’s it was a full on week of madness. It was fantastic to see you all getting stuck in and we really hope this continues.

Note: When you buy tickets at the MISU desk and support your union it all goes back into running even more events for you cough cough RAG week. So make sure to get involved in everything going on J

With the new MISU App up and running, the renovated Siopa, new food in the canteen , new bike sheds under construction and the instalment of the new Disability doors it’s been mad busy but we are loving it.

We have loads more coming up like SHAG week  and so much more so keep an eye on the MISU Facebook page and if you have any questions please #askmisu Cool

MISU Gaeilge & Culture Blog – Seachtain 2

Agus deireadh curtha leis an gcéad coicís den bhliain tá an oiread sin tar éis tarlúint ar an gcampas. Idir coistí nua do na cumainn agus cairdeas nua idir gach aon duine sa choláiste is am tabhachtach é I saol an choláiste. Tá riméad orm a rá go bhfuil coiste nua ag Cumann Gaelach gan Smál is beidh siad gníomhach as seo ar aghaidh chun an Ghaeilge agus cultúr na hÉireann a chur chun cinn. Má tá speis ag aon duine iontu cuirfinn lán-fháilte rompu nascadh leis an gCumann ar facebook. Ach ní hé seo an t-aon cumann atá ar fáil. Is cultúr ar leith iad na cumainn ar fad agus má tá speis agaibh in aon ceann acu níl sé ro-dhéanach ar chor ar bith nascadh leo.

There is loads after happening on the campus by the end of the first fortnight. Between committees being elected and all those new friends everybody’s made it’s been a busy aul week. I’m delighted to announce that Cumann Gaelach Gan Smál have elected a new committee to go forth and promote the Irish language and culture. If you are interested you are more than welcome to contact the guys via facebook and see what will be going on. But this isn’t the only society or culture available. Every society and club has their own language and their own culture so go out and see if any are your kinda thing. If you have any interest in joining one it is definitely not too late to do so.

Beir bua, Caoimhín

Welfare and Equality Blog Week 1 and 2.

Hey Guys!

So first things first, welcome back to Mary I and a special welcome to all the new 1st Year Students. We are so happy to have you here and hope that your years will be as enjoyable as ours have been so far!

For those of you who don’t know, we are the Welfare & Equality Officers for this academic year. Our names are Tina O’ Dwyer and Mark Dooley and we are both 4th Year B.A. students. We have been very busy for the first two weeks, and here is some of what we have been doing so far!

Freshers week was our first official week back and there was definitely a great buzz around the college, which we LOVED to see! There were many events running throughout the week for everyone to attend and participate in. Most notably were Tuesday night and Thursday night which were the busiest nights. It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and having so much fun.

We also met with the Health and Safety Officer, Caroline Duffy, to discuss events we plan on running throughout the year. Then in week 2 we met with Breda Halpin in the Medical Centre, Nessa Breen and Brid O’ Connell in the Counsellors Office and Nicola Hurley the head of Student Parent Support Services, to see what they could do for us and in return what we could do or what events we could run for them.

On Wednesday the 16th of September we had the Res Block Mixer and on Thursday the 17th we had our International Mixer. Both of these events went very well and many new connections and friendships were formed. We are also in the process of planning Monday Blues for Blue September which will take place on Monday 21st of September so be sure to wear something blue and show your support in raising awareness for Men’s Cancer research. There will be events happening on the day so please be sure to get involved and have fun!

Now for a more serious note, while it is good and we are glad to see people enjoying themselves we just want to stress how important it is to look after each other and yourselves when out and about, especially at night. We would also like to mention that event tickets are available at the SU desk in Tara and any ticket purchases help fund RAG Week so be sure to buy your tickets at the SU and attend as many Mary I events as possible.

Hope Weeks 1 and 2 were not too stressful, and if you do ever need us don’t hesitate to contact us on Facebook or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Peace and Love,

Mark and Tina.

A research pillar was introduced to the Service in September 2010 with the aim of sharing the learning of the service by producing a series of resource materials for use/adaption by other third level colleges.

The first resource, the Information Guide for Student Parents and Expectant Parents at Third Level, was researched and produced by Nicola Hurley (Student Parent Support Co-Ordinator) and Lorraine Whisker (Independent Researcher) in consultation with the HSE CPP and other stakeholders. Following a successful pilot phase in 2011, the Guide was launched in November 2012. The second edition was published in November 2013. SPSS handbook image

This Guide brings together information for students who experience crisis pregnancy while at college and student parents, both within and returning to education and for those who provide supports to this target group. It aims to capture the reality of the 260 expectant students and student parents who have engaged with the MIC Student Parent Support Service since it began.  Their college experience is dramatically different from that of the ‘average’ student and the guide is the culmination of the learning from these experiences.

The most recent online guide was published in April 2019. This handbook is a revised version of the original ‘Information Guide for Student Parents and Expectant Parents at Third Level’ which was launched nationally in November 2012, disseminated to all Irish third level institutions and published on the HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme website. To download a copy click on the Info Guide.

The service has also produced a series of fact sheets, which aim to provide information and advice for expectant parents and student parents at third level. They cover a range of topics, from how to balance family responsibilities and studies to access and custody. Click on the title below to read the pamphlet.

It has been a very busy semester so far, here is an update on what we have been doing for you!

We have worked closely with the college to help to improve some of the busiest services including:

Assisting the college with the funding for an additional Nurse in the Medical Centre

Selling the photocopying cards for the Library in An Siopa

Providing parking stickers & park magic starter packs to all student motorists

In 2008 the Student Union has donated €20,000 to the Student Assistance Fund, and €667 worth of books to the Access Office. The Student Union have also funded an extra day per week for the Student Parent Co-Ordinator service. This supplements the funding from the Crisis Pregnancy Agency for this project.

The Student Diary 2008-09 was complied by our team here in the Student Union, and the production costs were covered by advertising. The feedback from the College community has been very positive, and we hope you continue to find the diary useful!

You may know that during the past year the Student Union has undergone a Quality Review. One of the recommendations of this review was that we “re-brand” the Student Union, and re-develop our website. We commenced the re-branding process in June 2008 with Neville Design, and we are delighted with our new logo. Branded merchandise including USB Keys, refill pads, and of course hoodies are all selling well, and the logo looks fantastic on everything. The design of the logo is based on our new mission statement, which we also developed during our quality review:

Giving you a voice, helping you to use it, enriching your college experience.

Our new website www.misu.ie, went live on the 29th of August. A key development of this website is the “Mary I Live” section which is updated daily by Edel Golden, a 3rd Year BA student on work placement with us until December 2008. Edel has done a wonderful job both on the website & helping us here in the office, and we will miss her when she sets off for Chicago in January. We are working closely with every department of the college to encourage everybody in the college community to let us know what’s going on, and we will put this information up on “Mary I Live” daily, and if you have an event on that you would like the College community to get involved in, just e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the details.

Our Student Centre is finally underway and we are so excited, it is literally growing out of the ground, and it is estimated that we will move in to the new building in spring 2010. This new building will make such a difference to student life here in Mary I. with our new student centre, which will have a brand new “An Siopa”, a Café & Bookshop, recreation area, 500 seater theatre, many new teaching facilities, new computer labs, medical centre, counselling & chaplaincy spaces, so it will be a great place to be & right next door to Tailteann too!

Class Rep. Training took place on the 24th of September, we have over 70 class reps. If you want to find out who your class rep is just check the list outside our office on the Union Council notice board.

The Student Union Executive assisted with the Orientation of the First Year students in September, which included a great BBQ, Tag Rugby, Dodge ball, Giant Jenga & Twister extravaganza in Tailteann on a beautiful autumn evening. The event was a great success, and we will hopefully have a similar event in spring 2009.

Clubs and Societies are alive & well, we have 5 Clubs & 20 Societies up & running, under the guiding hand of Louise Quinn. Classes in Tailteann have been well attended throughout the term. Love it or Leave week it gave our students a great opportunity to try out some new activities, and you get to do it all again in Semester Two!

Open Days took place on a rainy 14th & 15th of October. Many of the third year BA students on placement in the college assisted with tours for the 2000 students who visited Mary I. and as always our students did us proud and the secondary students were very impressed.

Graduation 2008 took place on Thursday & Friday the 23rd & 24th of October, almost 1000 students were conferred, and the ceremonies went very well. A record 8 PhD’s were awarded, and we would like to especially congratulate Timothy Moloney who was conferred with a PhD in History. Timothy was our Equality Officer in the Student Union in the academic year 1998-99. The Student Union organised a weekend’s entertainment for the Graduates, with Trinity Rooms on Thursday & Friday nights, the Graduation Ball took place on Saturday the 24th in the South Court Hotel where 820 guests had a great evening. A special guest on the evening was Ian Russell who was President of MISU in 1998/99.

The budget brought some bad news for students, and Mary I. in the form of an increase in the Student Services Charge from €900 in 2008 to €1500 in 2009, and the government have still not ruled out the possibility of the re-introduction of third level fees. The reality of the budgets’ effect on education is: 1000 primary teaching jobs lost, no substitute teachers for uncertified sick leave, the loss of teaching posts from schools that are no longer designated as disadvantaged; and a new ceiling of a maximum of two language support teachers for most schools. John White, general secretary of the ASTI, says up to 1,000 posts will be lost at second level because of the Budget changes. The Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) predicted a significant increase in student drop-out levels before the Leaving Cert because of the Budget cuts. A number of specific programmes which promote student retention have been hit by the cuts. There will be a protest in Limerick early in 2009 organised by the INTO & I would urge you all to make your voices heard on this issue.

An Siopa and the SU Office are as busy as ever, selling all the essentials, including the best coffee in Mary I. (buy 4 get 1 free!). Dee in the SU office and Ger, Jo, Charles, Sue, Ita, Alison & Joyce in An Siopa are doing a great job providing you with the items you need at the best possible price. We appreciate your custom, and would like to assure you that profit from all our commercial activities goes right back into providing as many student supports & services as possible. If there is anything we can do for you just pop in to our office & let us know, good luck to everybody in the exams and enjoy Christmas.

Well thats semester 1 pretty much wrapped up. Twas pretty darn hectic with gigs, comedians, themed Tuesday nights and an assortment of exciting stuff in the lounge. Some of our favourite bits of the semester include the Sex and the City day & night, the Mary I band showcase in Dolans, the Halloween party and Drama week. We still have a few tricks up our sleeves for the rest of the semester! An honourable mention goes out to the carnival day in orientation week, those moustaches were class! What can we say about semester 2? Well, there is one thing on everyone’s mind, (drum roll please)..RAG WEEK!!! We, along with the entire SU are working tirelessly to give you the best rag week yet . Remember that we still want to hear from you. Any ideas, you know the drill. Rag week is not the only thing in semester 2: There is refresher’s week, shag week, seachtain na Gaeilge, not to mention our weekly club night in Trinity Rooms and there will always be a few gigs in Dolans. This semester saw the launch of TV Thursday. Basically we have some of the best TV on show in the lounge every Thursday. Some of the best so far have been Family Guy and Saw I-IV. Next semester you can expect to see The Hills, Skins, Father Ted, Will & Grace, American Dad, Desperate Housewives, Heroes….the list goes on. Big shout out to all the Freshers, hope ye have all settled in by now. The BEST is yet to come… Remember that all the money from Tuesday nights in Trooms goes toward funding Rag Week, so bí nn nó bí cearnógach(take that pa and ailbhe-Love you guys). Happy Christmas, and good luck with exams!

Ais and Denis

Hi all,Hope your first semester back went well. Well all the post-grads have had the usual fun with printers breaking down while deadlines are looming. Teaching practice and exams and the other tonne of assignments have also been a treasure to behold so most of the grads have been keeping a very low profile except for the usual troupers that keep truckin on for all of us. Hopefully next semester we'll be able to actually have lives again. I dread to think that this will be the last semester in college for us. Can't wait for next semester already. Hope Santa comes to all of you

xxx Rita x

Phew it’s been a crazy semester on the clubs and societies front! We started the semester with a really successful Clubs&Societies Day, raising more money than any other Clubs&Societies day to date – even Daithí Ó Sé popped in for a piece of the action! We spent the next week or two attending the first meeting of every club and society to help them set up their committees . We then held a training night for all committee members to inform everyone of what was involved in their particular role. We have also held several Clubs and Societies Councils to keep in regular contact with committees and help them with any problems. Of course we’re not the only ones who have been busy; none of this would happen without our wonderful Student Activities Officer Louise Quinn and the hard-working committees of the clubs and societies, who have organised some fantastic events over the last few months. Other highlights of the semester include orientation week, the college open day and going to Dublin protesting against education cut backs in the budget. Next semester we look forward to organising another Clubs and Societies Day, holding more Clubs and Societies Councils and helping clubs and societies organise some great events for you guys! Hope you all have a great Christmas,

Cait and Clara x
